For your $1,000 tax deductible donation you will receive a hand-crafted, elk bone knife. These bones come from elk that were hunted in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. Most hunters will discard the legs from the knee down. We come around and scavenge for these discard legs like coyotes after the hunters have left. We will only take half of what we find, we leave the other half for the animals to use. We always leave an offering of thanks and gratitude in exchange for the elk legs we gather. We then skin the legs removing the hide and hoof of the leg, which we use to make other things as well. Then we carefully remove the tendons, which we dry and process into string and or cordage. Once we have just bone left and have cleaned it we score it and split it in half. At this point we clean them a second time and then boil them to remove some of the oils in order to scrape and sand the bones into shape. Once we have the knife shape we then rap the handle in elk raw hide and sharpen the edge by fire-hardening and burnishing. This knife are very functional and a great conversation piece. We hope that you honor the elk by using these knifes in your daily lives. Allow the spirit and energy of the elk to live on through your daily use of the knife. This well foster connection and a relationship with not only the elk but with bone tools as well.
